Our campsite is located on the outskirts of Alphen aan den Rijn and situated very centrally in the West of Holland. Historical cities like Leiden, Gouda, The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Delft are very easy to reach by car or public transport. But it is not just the cities that make our area worth visiting, also the Natural Parks and historical landscape of the Green Heart will make your stay unique. Beautiful water and lake-areas like De Nieuwkoopse Plassen, Reeuwijkse Plassen and Spookverlaat, can be reached at biking-distance from our campsite. Enjoy the many bike-roads in the area and plan your own favourite track with the Bike-networksystem that covers the whole of the region. Most of the natural parks can be visited by bike, boat or can be enjoyed from one of the many hiking routes. You will be surprised to find so much natural beauty in between of the highly populated western region of Holland.
Our campsite is a quiet and relaxing base for exploring Holland, as well for City-sightseeing as for bird- and naturewatching!
There are three water features on the campsite that are bordered by thousands of local plants. We also see a lot of birds and water creatures have found their habitat in our ponds. Several nesting boxes have been placed in and around the haystack which are gratefully used by kestrels, starlings and pigeons. The dike on the western bank of the ponds is not accessible to guests in order to ensure peace and security for the more shy birds. Beekeeper Jan has a nice spot for his hives on the dike between the two ponds. He regularly takes guests to his hives and tells them about the life of his bees and their special place in the ecosystem. Last year, a new nature reserve has been completed, consisting of, among other things, a swamp area and a bird-watching wall. The IJsvogel (Kingfisher) Nature Reserve is located right next to the campsite.
The animal pasture next to the haystack is currently inhabited by the sheep and the pigs. The chickens roam free around the campsite. Old bread and vegetable waste can be thrown in the crib over the fence; the animals are grateful to you!
We would like to contribute to a cleaner world. That's why we only use ecological cleaning products that are biodegradable. Waste is separated into various waste streams. Where possible, waste is reused in order to achieve a beautiful, sustainable design. We mainly use energy-saving devices and lighting with motion detectors. Our ultimate aim is to be self-sufficient and to use water, electricity and gas even more sustainably.
In addition to "green ideals", we also have a strong feeling that we want to mean something more. We are happy to provide a working space for people with disabilities. Adfund Guided Working is a small company that helps people with disabilities to integrate into society in a personal way. Three days a week they come to help us with all kinds of jobs, like mowing the lawn, weeding, sweeping or simply chatting with our guests. It is great to see how they flourish and feel very appreciated on our campisite. For a number of years they keep their own vegetable and picking garden at the back of the site. The fruit and vegetables grown with great care are sold in the haystack. They regularly bring surpluses to the food bank.
On the outside of the haystack a nest box has been placed at a height of approx. 5 meters. The nest box is especially suitable for the kestrel, but other birds can also enter such as jackdaws, Egyptian geese and magpies. In recent years, a kestrel pair has bred each time. In the spring of 2020, 4 kestrel chicks hatched from the egg. After they have all flown out, they come back to the nest now and then. The camera images can be followed live on nestkastlive.nl
